We often receive various questions from inexperienced customers about cannabis use. One question that often pops up among these inexperienced customers is how much cannabis actually costs and whether there are any significant differences.
In practice, it turns out that "experienced" cannabis users are not always able to estimate the price of cannabis very well, and often pay too much for (the quality of) cannabis.
So, if you're new to this world and wondering if you're getting a good price for your weed , or if you're curious about what kind of prices you can expect, read on!
What influences the price of weed
Before we discuss the price of cannabis, it's good to first discuss what influences the price of cannabis and why prices vary so much.
First of all, there are several different types of drugs. Because drugs are generally illegal and therefore often sold illegally, there's no fixed price for a drug. Therefore, different prices are charged for these different types of drugs.
But even for the same drug, the price can vary considerably. The price of weed (or hash ) depends on several factors, such as supply and demand, strain type, quality, scarcity, etc. For other types of drugs, the following factors also play a role: purity, the extent to which the drug is cut, the type of dealer, and the location where the drug was obtained, etc.
Looking back over the past few years, the price of Dutch cannabis has risen by about 30% in 10 years. This is partly due to inflation, but also because demand for cannabis has increased significantly in recent years.
How much does 1 gram of weed cost
As mentioned earlier, prices vary widely due to various factors, so we'll have to work with averages here. If we look at the average consumer price of one gram of Dutch weed in 2022, it's €9.59.
The average wholesale price for Dutch weed ranges from €3 (low quality) to €7.50 (top quality) per gram.
There are also major differences between the Dutch and foreign markets. On average, you pay €4.39 for one gram of weed (consumer price) abroad.
One joint contains an average of 0.3 grams. So, you can roll about three joints with one gram of weed. Depending on the THC content and your tolerance, it's possible to get high six times with three joints. This makes weed a relatively inexpensive drug, and it falls into the low-price range.
How many grams of weed are you allowed to buy?
Now that we know how expensive weed is and what influences its price, it's also helpful to know how many grams of weed you're allowed to buy.
You may buy and carry a maximum of 5 grams of cannabis per day/occasion at a coffeeshop. Carrying more than 5 grams of cannabis can be considered an indication that the person in question is selling cannabis, which is illegal in the Netherlands.
Cost of home grown cannabis

Namely, grow your own weed! Many personal cannabis growers report a very satisfying experience obtaining their weed this way, instead of simply picking it up at the local dispensary.
It's also very financially beneficial. We'll spare you the exact investment figures and costs. But under average conditions, you can grow your own weed at home for around €1.00-€1.50 per gram. This is, however, a period of successful cultivation over at least several years.
